Cryogenic Plant Loop Tuning & Alarm Review
When operators cannot rely on automatic control, we review proportional-integral-derivative (PID) loop behavior and the control strategy against the way the plant runs. We separate tuning questions from measurement, valve, and process issues. We tune with Protuner, in partnership with Techmation Inc.; your team implements operating changes.

We get called when
- High-pressure / low-pressure (HP/LP) column, reboiler level, and purity loops in manual because nobody trusts them
- Alarm load high enough that operators mute it
- Cycling that operators correct by habit
- Control strategy nobody has revisited since startup
What you get
- Loop performance survey with priority issues ranked
- Tuning recommendations, loop by loop
- Ranked alarm list for rationalization
- Handover notes written for the console

Tuning partner
We tune with Protuner, in partnership with Techmation Inc.
We use the Protuner loop analyzer from Techmation Inc. to support work on the regulatory control loops in your existing control system. We rank the issues, recommend tuning changes, and document the response. Your operators implement the changes; we provide the cryogenic operating context and review.
How the review works
Establish why the automatic response is not meeting the operating need.
Review loop performance
Review relevant loop modes, variability, operator interventions, and the operating conditions in which the problems occur.
Prioritize the issues
Rank the issues by their effect on plant operation and the evidence available to investigate them.
Tune and document
We use Protuner to support tuning recommendations. Your operators make agreed changes through the plant's procedures, and the settings, reasoning, and observed response are recorded.
Where this comes up
Related industries and processes.
How the work is measured
Measures used to assess the work.
Loop modes and operator interventions before and after agreed changes, interpreted against the operating conditions.
Alarms per shift, and the peak rate through an upset, against a load an operator can realistically work.
Column response through a rate change, including stability and the interventions required from operators.
Why consider a review
Unreliable automatic control can increase operator workload.
A loop may stay in manual because of tuning, instrumentation, valve behavior, process constraints, or a deliberate operating decision. We review the reason before recommending a change.
Your controls and operations teams retain ownership. We provide a focused review, documented recommendations, and support while your team evaluates the response.

Common questions
Questions we get before the first call.

Our loops mostly work. Is this worth doing?
The useful question is whether the control response meets the operating need. We look at variability, repeated interventions, and the reasons for manual operation; a manual-loop count alone does not establish a tuning problem.
Can you work with our existing control system?
We review the loops and control strategy on the system you already use. The introductory call establishes the platform, the available data, and whether the work fits our scope.
What do you tune with?
Protuner, from Techmation Inc. — that is the partnership on this service. We use it to support loop analysis and tuning recommendations on your existing control system. Your operators make agreed changes, and we document the settings and observed response.
Can this be done remotely?
Loop performance and control strategy can be reviewed remotely when suitable records are available. We agree whether on-site support is needed for the tuning work and observation of the plant response.
What about alarm load?
Loop tuning and alarm review are related but distinct. A tuning problem can contribute to an alarm flood, but it is not the only possible cause. We screen and rank alarms against your alarm philosophy, or a working basis agreed with your team, and record the abnormal condition, consequence, and operator action for review. This supports your team's ISA-18.2 (alarm management) rationalization work; the decisions and any full alarm-management program remain with your team.
Why are so many cryogenic plant loops left in manual?
A common pattern is an upset that put HP/LP column pressure, reboiler level, or purity in manual, and nobody put them back. That is not the only reason a loop stays in manual. We rank the bad actors from the historian and the panel, and your operators make the PID change with us alongside. We do not predict the column will run in auto.
