Hydrogen Liquefaction and Liquid Hydrogen Systems

We support liquid hydrogen teams investigating liquefier interruptions, energy use, and storage or transfer losses. Reviews connect feed, refrigeration, inventory, and transfer records to assess possible contributors and identify further checks, with measurement limitations stated.

Common operating problems

  • Boil-off above expectation, and nobody can say which tank, transfer, or trailer it belongs to
  • A liquefier that trips on feed swings the upstream plant considers normal
  • Para fraction read off the product analyzer and never reconciled against what the catalyst beds you actually run are delivering
  • Cold-end exchanger pressure drop creeping between derimes
  • Flash and vent losses at liquid hydrogen (LH2) trailer and tank filling written off as the cost of doing business

What we look at first

  • Specific energy per unit of liquid against the plant's own best sustained window, at the rate actually being run
  • The boil-off balance across production, storage, transfer, and delivery, with the measurement boundary and uncertainty stated
  • Cold-box pressure-drop and temperature-profile trends against the last clean baseline
  • Recycle and refrigeration machine behavior — compressor and expander drift against their own history
  • Feed purity excursions, and which contaminants can freeze out or accumulate in the cold end relative to the liquefier's feed basis

We assess available para-hydrogen measurements and conversion-stage conditions against the operating basis, alongside storage and transfer records. Findings distinguish a possible conversion-related heat contribution from other explanations and identify where the measurements do not resolve the cause.

Optimization opportunities

Operating questions worth investigating.

Reconcile boil-off across production, storage, and transfer

Losses can be difficult to assign when each part of the chain uses a different measurement boundary. We reconcile the available records and distinguish operating losses, equipment questions, and measurement uncertainty.

Feed changes and liquefier availability

Liquefiers fed from variable upstream production trip on swings the upstream plant considers routine. We assess how those feed changes interact with the operating envelope — setpoints and alarm limits, not the protective trips — and distinguish control limitations from process or equipment constraints, rather than assuming the commissioning settings are either right or conservative.

Ortho-para conversion performance

Conversion the catalyst beds do not finish is paid for in storage, and after startup the beds are easy to stop watching. We review para-fraction measurements alongside the conversion-stage and storage records to assess whether conversion performance contributes to the loss — and say so when the evidence cannot separate it from tank heat ingress, transfer losses, or measurement uncertainty.

Refrigeration performance against comparable operation

We compare refrigeration-cycle performance with suitable historical periods to investigate changes in power use or rate. The comparison states where the available data does not support a conclusion.

These are areas for review, not promises about your facility. The introductory call establishes fit and scope. Findings depend on the operating data reviewed during an agreed engagement.

How we help this process

Services for this process.

We review the refrigeration machines, cold end, feed history, and hydrogen loss account. Comparisons use suitable operating periods and distinguish supported findings from gaps in the record.

Liquefier that trips or will not settle

Feed swings, cold-end plugging, restarts that will not hold: we start with the shift and the window in the historian, and the working theory is tested against your own good runs first.

Operations Troubleshooting

Specific energy off the plant's own best

We compare specific energy at similar operating rates and document the comparison conditions, observed difference, and evidence gaps.

Performance Optimization

Cold-end and level loops left in manual

We review the reasons for manual operation and the response of the relevant cold-end and level loops before recommending tuning or further checks.

Loop & Controls Support

A crew new to liquid hydrogen

We work with the crew's existing experience and the plant's procedures to document operating sequences, job aids, and training needs.

Training & Startup Support

The machines the box depends on

Recycle compressors and expanders on a recurring watch list aimed at the failure modes that actually end runs.

Reliability Advisory

Boil-off and vent gas you already own

We account for boil-off and vent losses across the agreed boundary, with the supporting measurements and uncertainty stated.

Argon & Specialty Product Recovery

Working with your team

Boil-off and power use need to be reconciled with the conditions in which the plant runs.

How we support your team

Your team and equipment suppliers may already hold pieces of the loss account. We bring those records into one review and identify the unanswered questions.

What the engagement provides

Both founders review the agreed liquefier or loss question. Findings can cover boil-off, feed-related availability, and refrigeration performance, with the comparison conditions, uncertainty, and next actions documented.

What you keep

Your operators retain the findings and supporting record so later feed changes or loss investigations can be compared with the earlier review.

A sustained loss may involve production, storage, transfer, or more than one part of the chain. The review establishes what can be separated with the available evidence.
