LNG Liquefaction and Boil-Off Gas Handling
We support liquefied natural gas operations investigating production constraints, energy use, and boil-off handling. Reviews consider the installed refrigeration cycle, feed conditions, compressor and driver performance, and storage or transfer requirements to develop priorities for further investigation and operating review.

What is the facility doing?
Choose the symptom closest to your operating problem.
Common operating problems
- Boil-off gas handling that dictates how the plant runs instead of following it
- Mixed refrigerant composition drifting away from the curve it was designed for
- A rate ceiling nobody has traced to either the driver or the process
- Ambient sensitivity that makes summer a materially different plant
- Cooldown and startup sequences with inconsistent duration and outcome
What we look at first
- Specific power per unit of LNG against both ambient and rate
- Refrigerant composition against the cooling curve the exchanger was designed around
- Compressor approach to surge and remaining driver load margin
- Boil-off gas (BOG) compressor turndown, and its disposition across reliquefaction, fuel, and flare
- Cooldown and startup duration compared across the last several events
Marine bunkering and fuel-gas operations can also be in scope. The review can examine boil-off management, saturation conditions, and transfer records between the agreed custody points. We account for vapor generation and its destinations within the agreed boundary, distinguishing recovered or reused gas from flared or vented streams and unresolved quantities.
Optimization opportunities
Operating questions worth investigating.
Refrigerant composition as an operating variable
Composition drifts through makeup, losses, and habit. Bringing it back toward what the main cryogenic heat exchanger (MCHE) was designed for is often where we look first for recoverable rate and specific-power losses, measured in your own trend.
Establish whether the driver or process limits production
Plants routinely accept a rate limit without ever proving which equipment imposes it. The answer changes what is worth spending money on, and it is often not what the site assumed.
Boil-off generation and handling
We account for boil-off generation and its destinations, including reliquefaction, fuel, and flare, to show where handling constraints or product losses need further review.
Operating targets across changing ambient conditions
We review whether seasonal operating targets reflect ambient conditions and equipment limits. A fixed target may be appropriate in some conditions and limiting in others.
Cryogenic gas-processing performance
Turboexpander plants, demethanizers, and nitrogen rejection units can also have cryogenic operating questions. Each review uses the actual equipment, feed composition, operating limits, and available performance history.
These are areas for review, not promises about your facility. The introductory call establishes fit and scope. Findings depend on the operating data reviewed during an agreed engagement.
How we help this process
Services for this process.
We review the refrigerant loop, compressors and drivers, cold-end records, and boil-off gas handling. Comparisons account for the actual liquefaction process, ambient conditions, and operating rate.
Rate ceiling nobody has traced to driver or process
The plant accepted a number. We start with the shift and the historian and establish whether the driver, the compressor, or the cold end is actually imposing it — before anyone writes a capital request.
Operations TroubleshootingMixed refrigerant off the cooling curve
We review refrigerant composition and main-exchanger performance against the plant's operating basis and historical record. Nitrogen liquefaction reviews use the corresponding cycle, rate, and ambient conditions.
Performance OptimizationControl response across seasonal operating changes
We review how relevant loops behave as ambient conditions and operating targets change. Where tuning is in scope, we provide a documented Protuner tune and record the observed response with your operators.
Loop & Controls SupportCooldown and startup the next shift can run
We review differences between cooldown and startup events, then work through the relevant sequences with your crews using their own plant procedures. Advisory support during an event is agreed in the scope.
Training & Startup SupportDriver, compressor, and the machines the loop depends on
We group trips and near-misses by mechanism — driver, compressor, surge margin, exchanger — and hand the shift a watch list aimed at those modes, not a calendar copied from the last outage.
Reliability AdvisoryBoil-off as a designed stream, not a nuisance
Reactive boil-off handling costs product and stability at the same time. We account for generation and disposition across reliquefaction, fuel, and flare, and name which losses are worth working rather than absorbing.
Argon & Specialty Product RecoveryWorking with your team
Lost rate and higher specific power need an explanation, even when the plant stays running.
Your team and equipment suppliers may already be reviewing the constraint. We add a focused assessment of the operating record and document which explanations are supported and which remain open.
Both founders review the agreed operating question. Findings may cover driver and process limits, refrigerant performance, and boil-off generation and handling, with evidence gaps and next actions stated explicitly.

Your operators retain the findings, composition and cooldown observations, and watch list so the next seasonal review can start from an established record.
The review compares rate, power use, ambient conditions, and boil-off handling to identify the questions behind a sustained performance change.
