Helium Recovery, Purification and Liquefaction
We support helium teams investigating recovery performance, purification issues, liquefier interruptions, and transfer losses. Reviews follow the agreed process from feed or collected return gas through purification, liquefaction, storage, and transfer, using the actual equipment and measurement boundaries.

What is the facility doing?
Choose the symptom closest to your operating problem.
Common operating problems
- A recovery loop returning less than it was built to return, and no agreed number for what it actually captures
- Purity events at the liquefier inlet that end runs and nobody traces to a source
- Losses that vanish between capture, purification, and reliquefaction because the balance has never been closed
- Transfill and dewar practice treated as tradition rather than as a loss mechanism
- Air ingress and freezing contaminants plugging cold heads and traps on a schedule everyone has stopped questioning
What we look at first
- The helium balance, closed end to end — capture, purify, liquefy, use, vent — against what the loop was built to do
- Impurity trends at the liquefier inlet against purifier regeneration practice
- Liquefier specific energy against the plant's own best sustained window
- Gasholder and recovery compressor cycling against the capture load actually arriving
- Storage and dewar boil-off, and the vent-event log nobody reads
We define the streams, component basis, time period, and inventory changes included in the account. Findings distinguish measured or estimated losses from differences the available records cannot explain.
Optimization opportunities
Operating questions worth investigating.
Reconcile the helium mass balance
Recovery systems are commonly judged by whether they run, not by what fraction they return. Closing the mass balance from your own instrumentation names the loss points — unmetered vents and transfer practice are common candidates, and the balance says whether they are yours before the machinery takes the blame.
Recovery and liquefier capacity constraints
When the loop can capture more than the liquefier can take, or the reverse, gas gets vented on schedule and the mismatch never makes it onto anyone's list. Establishing which side actually binds is the first real decision.
Purifier cycles and performance
We review purifier regeneration records alongside impurity and breakthrough history. That comparison helps identify whether the operating cycle or a different issue needs attention.
Transfer losses and operating practice
We examine dewar fills, transfills, and line cooldown records to assess losses and the operating conditions behind them. The findings distinguish supported explanations from equipment or measurement questions still to resolve.
These are areas for review, not promises about your facility. The introductory call establishes fit and scope. Findings depend on the operating data reviewed during an agreed engagement.
How we help this process
Services for this process.
We review the recovery loop, purifiers, liquefier, and transfers between them. Findings use your records and suitable comparison periods to identify constraints, loss points, and further checks.
Runs that end early
Purity events, plugging, a liquefier that will not hold: the historian window and the shift's account come first.
Operations TroubleshootingSpecific energy and capture rate off their own best
Both gaps written down from plant data, with the measurement to defend them.
Performance OptimizationLoops and levels the operators route around
We review recovery-loop control response and operator interventions to identify tuning questions, operating constraints, and the evidence needed for a recommendation.
Loop & Controls SupportKnowledge concentrated in one person
We work with the experienced operators to document procedures, operating observations, and the reasoning the next crew will need.
Training & Startup SupportThe compressors the loop depends on
Recovery compressors, gasholder cycling, and purifier switchovers on a recurring watch list, grouped by the mechanism that actually ends runs.
Reliability AdvisoryVented product you already bought
Recovery accounting, point by point, from capture to reliquefaction.
Argon & Specialty Product RecoveryWorking with your team
Unreconciled helium losses make recovery performance difficult to evaluate.
Your team may know the likely loss points but lack a consistent comparison across the loop. We review those records together and state which conclusions the measurements support.
Both founders review the agreed recovery or reliability question. You receive a helium balance where the records support it, purifier and transfer findings, and a prioritized list of evidence gaps and actions.

Your operators retain the loss account, operating context, and supporting records for the next review or handover.
Vents, transfers, and purifier or liquefier interruptions can affect the amount returned to use. A documented balance helps identify which losses deserve further investigation.
